The France: Musiques, Cultures, 1789-1918 network will assemble at a conference in advance of the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society in Minneapolis; the conference will be in partnership with the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de la Musique Romantique Française. The network
conference will take place on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 November, ending just before the beginning of the AMS meeting at 2.00 on 6 November. The conference committee consists of:
Jennifer Walker (jennifer.walker2@mail.wvu.edu)
Cana McGhee (cana_mcghee@g.harvard.edu)
Etienne Jardin (ej@bru-zane.com)
Mark Everist (mark@everist.eu)
Proposals for papers, groups of papers, workshops and other sorts of activities are invited on any topic relating to music in France during the long nineteenth century. Abstracts should be no more than 150 words, and should be sent to Cana McGhee at this address: cana_mcghee@g.harvard.edu no later than Friday, 20 June 2025. The committee hopes that this will allow members of the network to submit proposals in the light of the decisions of the main AMS programme committee. Abstracts should be in Word format, should not contain any indication of authorship and should be emailed with full co
ordinates of the author in the email. We anticipate notifying proposers by the end of June 2025 and producing a first draft of the programme in the middle of July 2025. In accordance with the general programme of FMC conferences, this event is in-person only, and there is no provision for online participation. Our last online event was in March 2025, and the next one will be in March 2027. We
have two slight innovations for this conference:
1. We hope that everyone making a proposal to the conference will be able to attend the entire event, arriving in Minneapolis no later than the evening on Tuesday 4 November in order to start at 09.00 on Wednesday 5 November.
2. We would like to offer support for those proposing to read papers for the first time at this conference. This would take the form of feedback on drafts between selection in late June and the conference in November, given by members of the FMC international steering committee or other senior figures. Please indicate on your submission if you are interested in this support.
Informal inquiries may also be made to any member of the committee at their email address above.
