The research project “Music, Networks, and Nationalism: Analyzing the Restoration Consciousness through the Correspondence of Eduardo López-Chavarri Marco (1871-1970)” [CIGE/2023/055], with María Ordiñana Gil (Universidad Internacional de Valencia-VIU) as the principal investigator, announces the celebration of an international conference to be held in Valencia (Spain) at the headquarters of the General Society of Authors and Publishers (SGAE) on September 25 and 26, 2025.
The conference aims to bring together national and international experts to analyze the correspondences and interpersonal networks that emerged among composers, musicians, and other agents involved in the invention and diffusion of Spanish music in the 19th and 20th centuries. It proposes the field of traditional music as a point of convergence, with a broad perspective that allows for the study of its modes of appropriation and transformation throughout the course of Spanish musical nationalism.
In this regard, proposals are invited that focus on unpublished correspondence, reconstructions of social networks based on correspondence, research on agents, practices, and common themes in the letters, as well as studies of music and nationalism from historical, cultural, or comparative approaches that complement epistolary analysis. Proposals that focus on Eduardo López-Chavarri Marco’s network of correspondents will be particularly valued, given his role as a mediator between popular music and the representation of Valencian identity. The Scientific Committee encourages the use of both qualitative methodologies, through the editing, study and intensive use of letters, as well as quantitative approaches within the framework of Digital Humanities (SNA – Social Network Analysis).
